Mark your calendars.
The official opening of Buddy’s Pizza in downtown Detroit — at 1565 Broadway near Grand Circus Park, just steps from Comerica Park — is set for 11 a.m. Dec. 11.
“Since 1946, Buddy’s Pizza has grown alongside Detroit, remaining committed to the city and the community,” said Burton Heiss, Buddy’s Pizza CEO, in a news release. “Opening the downtown location feels like we’re truly coming home, and the support from the community has been overwhelming. This location further cements our roots in Detroit — a city that helped invent the Original Detroit-Style Pizza.”
This highly anticipated Detroit opening marks more than 70 years since Buddy’s got its start in 1946 on Conant Street and Six Mile in Detroit.
Inside the 7,000-square-foot space, there's seating for about 225 people, including bar seating with high-top tables and a grab-and-go area. Plans are for outdoor patio seating on the Broadway side of the building.
The restaurant features high ceilings with exposed ventilation, brick walls and subway-tiled walls near the kitchen and grab-and-go counter. There’s plenty of seating on both street sides with glass partition walls on the Broadway side that will open onto the summer patio.
With an urban design, the space also plays homage to Buddy’s historical elements.
There’s the hexagon-tiled floor when you walk with “Detroit Original” inset. On the floor near the bar is a nod to the original with Conant Street inset in the tile on one side and Six Mile Road inset on another side.
Near the bar area, there are murals that pay tribute to Buddy's original location and done in the style of famed Diego Rivera Detroit Industry landmark murals.
Without the auto industry, there'd be no Buddy's. The hallmark of Buddy's Pizza is that they baked in pans originally used in factories to hold automotive parts.
Two dining options will be offered: the dining room or quick-service area. The downtown location's new style of food service is designed for the fast-paced or lunch crowd. In the quick-service area, there’s Buddy’s-by-the-Square, sandwiches, wraps, and salads to grab-and-go.
On opening day, Buddy’s will honor another Detroit original — the Motown Museum.
All opening day sales will benefit the museum and its community programs, which include Ignite and Spark Summer Camps, AMPLIFY, the museum’s annual singing competition, and Motown Mic.

How to get free pizza
It wouldn’t be a Buddy’s opening without free pizza, but you will have to hunt for it. For the Detroit opening, Buddy’s is hosting a social media scavenger hunt throughout the downtown Detroit area.
Here's what you need to do:
- Look for the 100 Buddy’s Pizza branded music records around town. Starting Wednesday, the vinyl records (not in album jacket) will be placed at well-known landmarks throughout downtown Detroit within a 1-mile radius of Buddy's. The records will remain out until the day of the grand opening.
- Once you find the records, bring them to the downtown location to receive a free 4-square pizza.
- If you find a record, you can post a picture of it on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #BuddysDowntown for a chance to win one free pizza every month for an entire year.

“This is our first restaurant downtown — in the heart of the city where the Buddy’s story began,” said Wes Pikula, chief brand officer for Buddy’s Pizza in announcing the opening date. “We are looking forward to continuing to create happy memories with Detroit residents and visitors for generations to come.”
Last February, the iconic Detroit-based chain announced Buddy's would fill the space formerly occupied by Angelina Italian Bistro at 1565 Broadway in Grand Circus Park.
Angelina’s closed in December 2017. Shortly after its closing, Buddy's announced plans for local and national expansion, partnering with New York-based private investment firm CapitalSpring.
The iconic chain is known as the creator of Detroit-style pizza — one with thick crust, crispy, caramelized edges and sauce drizzled atop the cheese. Detroit-style pizza has become a major trend in recent years, with Motor City-influenced pizzerias all over the country.
This is the second Detroit location and will be the 16th overall. The local chain has been on an expansion blitz, opening new Buddy’s Pizzeria locations this year in Plymouth, Grand Rapids and Woodhaven. In August, a Kalamazoo location was announced.
This downtown Buddy's is a prime spot because of its proximity to Ford Field, Comerica Park, the Detroit Opera House and other downtown venues. The Madison building, owned by Bedrock, also counts include ASHE Supply Co. coffee shop, Detroit Venture Partners and Microsoft as tenants according to its web site.
