LE ROY — It may have been one for the record books.
Jim Thomas has been making pizzas since 1960. On Dec. 30, he officially hung up his apron at Pizza Land, making his last customer pizza on Friday while showing The Daily News how it’s done.
“Dad had another restaurant down on Main Street in Le Roy,” Thomas said. “That burned. Well, we started pizza down there and brought it up here.”
Thomas’ family owns Pizza Land in Le Roy, and eventually expanded with two other shops in Avon and Caledonia.
Over the years, Thomas job was simple — make pizzas. And he’s come up with many over the years, one in particular being the “wagon wheel” pizza which consisted of a piece of salami in the center for the hub and ham strips down for the spokes.
Unfortunately, that didn’t take off.
Thomas enjoyed making cheese and pepperoni pizza, and over the years the ingredients haven’t changed once. He said some of the weirder pizzas he’s been asked to make have a quarter of this and that on the pizza and in the past, if people wanted something really weird on the pizza they didn’t have at the shop, he would tell them to bring it in and he would put it on the pizza for them.
While working at the pizza shop, he enjoyed the people and customers the most. Now that he’s retired though, he’s going to stay home and do woodworking.
“Find a good hobby to do to keep yourself busy,” Thomas said when asked what advice he would give to someone after spending 60 years doing the same thing over and over. “Take some vacations.”
