With Fair Lawn's newest pizzeria, Zevy's, it has more than a dozen - NorthJersey.com

FAIR LAWN — A new kosher pizza spot is coming to town, bringing unusual toppings like mac and cheese and onion rings. Zevy's Pizza is making its way to River Road, just around the corner from the staple Ray's Pizza.

When Zevy's opens, Fair Lawn will have more than a dozen pizzerias. That's one pizzeria for every 2,750 residents — better than the state's ratio of one per 4,450. If New Jersey is the pizza capital of the world, as its official Twitter account recently declared, could Fair Lawn be the pizza capital of New Jersey?

"Fair Lawn could be the pizza capital of New Jersey, without question," said Councilwoman Gail Rottenstrich. "We have the best pizza."

Residents can easily get into a heated discussion about which one is the best, said Mayor Kurt Peluso.

"The great thing is we all have something different to offer," said Jennifer Morales, manager of Ray's Pizza.

Zevy's Pizza will take the place of former business Tropical Scoops at 10-16 River Road. The 1,000-square-foot restaurant will hold 18 seats and is expected to open at the end of February.

Zev Rocklin chose Fair Lawn for his kosher pizzeria because of its growing Jewish community. He wants his pizza to appeal to everyone, though.

"I believe I will stand out from any other restaurant mainly because of my pizza. Topping choices will include mac and cheese, penne alla vodka, fried onions, cauliflower, onion rings and french fries," said Rocklin.

Also on River Road are Benjy's Kosher Pizza and Bella Vita Italian Restaurant. Both have their fans.

Ray's Pizza opened on Berdan Avenue in 2010, replacing another pizzeria.

Ness Pizza has been a mainstay for more than 60 years. "Thin crust, sweet sauce, and yummy cheese," said customer and Fair Lawn resident Jill Jason Davis.

Former Councilman and now Borough Historian John Cosgrove names Ness as his favorite, ever since his high school days, when he'd go there with friends for lunch.

His first pizza was from Kays Pizza, which is no longer in business. "I'm not sure why there are so many in Fair Lawn but Fair Lawn competes very highly for the best pizza," Cosgrove said.

There are more than 2,000 pizzerias in New Jersey, said Marilou Haverson, president of the New Jersey Restaurant and Hospitality Association. She said New Jersey loves its pizza because it is the best.

"I have been all over the country and it comes down to New Jersey just has excellent pizza. Possibly because there is a high concentration of Italians. I mean what's not to like about bread, sauce, and cheese?" she said.

For some owners, the pizza magic comes from the sweet and savory notes in the sauce that only a grandmother's wooden spoon could perfect. They also take pride in their hand-picked ingredients.

At Railyard Tavern the sauce on the bar pies is courtesy of owner Bob Piccoli's Italian grandmother's recipe. "It is like that sweet Northern Italian taste," said Piccoli.

When Railyard Tavern opened six years ago, the owners planned a bar with a small restaurant. "Instead it seems like we have a restaurant with a small bar," he said.

Not every pizza place can work in the pizza-heavy community. In 2018 Best of Fair Lawn Pizza opened on Morlot Avenue but has since closed.

Fair Lawn Chamber of Commerce member Wayne Robbins has four favorites: Ray’s, Ness, Two Guys and Benjy’s Kosher Pizza. Beyond good pizza, he sees two keys to success: proximity to the high school and ample parking.

"In general New Jersey is known for having the best bagels and pizza. I don't know if it's the water, the dough, or magic," said Robbins.

Still, he said, "There are so many now that it is hard to fathom how a new one would stand out."

And in addition to traditional Italian pizza, Fair Lawn has an option for South Indian pizza — pizza uthappam — from Manjal South Indian Cuisine.

Uthappam is a type of flatbread made of rice and lentils. At Manjal's, "pizza" is vegetable uthappam topped with cheese.

For Morales, of Ray's, pizza choice a good thing.

"There may be something that someone likes from us and then something that they really like at another place, and that’s OK."
