Local pizza shop reopens with new owner, has special Thanksgiving treat for community - Courier & Press

EVANSVILLE, Ind. —The new owner of Evansville's Pizza Pub wants to be sure everyone in the community has a chance at a nice, warm meal for Thanksgiving holiday.

He'll be offering a free meal on Thanksgiving to anyone who wants it.

Pizza Pub has been in Evansville for about four decades but has gone through some ownership and location changes over the years.

When the restaurant originally opened in 1979, it was located on Fulton Avenue. It remained a North Side staple until closing in 2013.

In late 2017, Yvonne Woodburn, reopened the restaurant moving it to a building on North Main that was being remodeled into a tea room. She worked to turn it into a restaurant where she operated it for about two years.

When Woodburn closed it again in early 2019, current owner Randy Dunn decided he wanted to run the pizza shop.

He bought the restaurant on Oct. 5 reopening it a short time later where he's serving up Pizza Pub's classic Una-style pizza with a thin, crispy crust piled with the special recipe sauce and lots of cheese.

They also have Chicago style pizza with layers of cheese and other toppings One of those weights in at about five pounds. The restaurant says it's "the best Chicago style pizza you'll get without actually driving to Chicago."

Their list of sandwiches includes different kinds of Stromboli ranging from vegetarian to barbecue. Also on the menu is a unique take on nachos featuring chips piled with cheese sauce, crumbled sausage and mozzarella.

Dunn is excited to be able to bring back all of Pizza Pub's classic dishes to Evansville. He grew up in the area and said it has a special meaning to him.

In addition to bringing Pizza Pub back to live, Dunn wants to give back. He's working with his longtime friend, minister Curtis Hardy, to make the free Thanksgiving meal possible.

"This is where our hearts are at, and we want to reach out to this neighborhood," Hardy said. "There's people that need some help, and on Thanksgiving, everybody should have a good meal, so we try to do something special."

The Thanksgiving meal will begin at 1 p.m., and they will continue to serve food until they run out.

They will also do a Thanksgiving basket giveaway that will include everything needed to cook a feast for the holiday. To enter, just visit Dunn's Facebook page and tag a family you feel is deserving of the basket.

"I try to help people in need and let people know God hasn’t forgotten about them. Randy’s reason for doing it is he’s just got a big heart," Hardy said.

On the big day, they will serve turkey, ham, stuffing, veggies and classic pies and desserts. If anyone wants to donate a dish to the meal, they can drop off food at Pizza Hub.

"It's going to be a good time with community and good food to celebrate Thanksgiving," Dunn said.
