It’s an impossible decision: pizza or tacos? Birmingham magazine polled its social media followers to find out which favorite food ranked supreme, and tacos narrowly defeated pizza with a vote of 57 percent to 43 percent. Below, find out where to get the best of both at local restaurants and food trucks.
WHERE TO GET PIZZA
Post Office Pies – Chef John Hall and Brandon Cain have gotten some serious recognition for their Avondale restaurant since it opened in 2014. Post Office Pies’ signature Brooklyn-style pizza is wood-fired in a brick oven, which means a charred-but-still-chewy crust with the perfect bite. The addition of handmade mozzarella and local toppings helps create the perfect pie. The Swine (meat lovers) and classic Margherita both are must-trys. postofficepies.com
Slice Pizza & Brew – One of the top spots for al fresco dining in town, the porch of Slice in Lakeview (and now in Vestavia, too) is most often found packed with happy diners enjoying a slice or two with a cold beverage (daily food and drink specials abound). Brothers Jeff, Jason, and Chris Bajalieh work with local farmers to create gourmet pizzas that range from barbecue and buffalo chicken to a Southern delicacy called the Soul Pie with turnip greens, black eyed peas, Conecuh sausage, grilled red onions, and bacon. slicebirmingham.com
Tortugas Homemade Pizza – Get a taste of the Windy City with authentic deep-dish pizza at Tortugas. In September, the family-owned and -operated restaurant celebrated its 20th year of business in the original Hoover location. They also have a second restaurant behind Good People Brewing downtown. The traditional Chicago-style stuffed pies are made with dough on the bottom and sides of a two-inch-deep pan. They are then filled with cheese and toppings and finished with a thin layer of crust and a ladleful of tangy tomato sauce. For traditionalists, the restaurant also offers thin crust pies. tortugaspizza.com
WHERE TO GET TACOS
Tacos Dos Hermanos – Two of our city’s most beloved taco trucks come from a pair of brothers with a passion for authentic Mexican street food. With one parked daily on Valley Avenue and the other at the intersection of 1st Avenue North and 14th Street downtown, hordes of hungry weekday workers line up for authentic tacos double-wrapped in fresh corn tortillas. Meat options include common offerings like chicken, pork, and steak, alongside more exotic options like tongue, tripe, and pork belly. Tacos are topped with diced onions and cilantro and served with a side of pickled jalapeños, carrots, and hot sauce for the bold. Facebook: Tacos Dos Hermanos
University Tacos – You can have tacos two ways at this hidden downtown gem. Regular tacos are served “American-style" in a hard or soft flour shell with lettuce, tomato, and cheese. Street tacos are served in soft corn tortillas with cilantro and onion. The campechano (chorizo with steak or chicken) is the perfect combo for a mid-day meal, but if you happen to be at the taco joint a little earlier in the day, try a breakfast taco filled with eggs, cheese, and your choice of meat. Little Donkey – “Mexican food with a Southern soul” is the motto at this local restaurant with locations in Homewood, on Highway 280, and in Montgomery. That philosophy is evidenced in two of the restaurant’s most popular tacos, the catfish and the fried chicken taco. The restaurant also offers pastor, carnitas, veggie, chicken, pork shoulder, and beef brisket fillings. Head to Little Donkey for happy hour seven days a week, when most tacos are only $2, and draft beer, wine, and frozen drinks are just $4. thelittledonkey.com
