Amici's Pizza in Berkley sold with menu refresh planned - Crain's Detroit Business

The popular Amici's Pizza and Living Room in Berkley has changed hands.

Longtime owners Jennifer Stark and Maureen McNamara sold the cozy pizza parlor on 12 Mile Road to Tim and Laura Kenrick. The deal closed Thursday, Tim Kenrick told Crain's. Terms were not disclosed.

The name is being changed slightly to Amici's Kitchen and Living Room to reflect a planned refresh of the menu, Kenrick said. Its tried and true offerings of pizza and salad will remain.

"We're not taking any hard lefts or rights," Kenrick said. "There's a reason they've been successful for the last 15 years."

Kenrick has been a resident of Berkley for the past 20 years and brings to the restaurant 30 years of hospitality experience. In tandem with the purchase of Amici's, he left his job as director of operations for Peas & Carrots Hospitality, which operates five restaurants in metro Detroit, including Como's in Ferndale and Social Kitchen in Birmingham.

Kenrick's last day with the restaurant group was Friday. He said the separation was amicable and that his nearly two years in the role helped prepare him for his next challenge.

Becoming the new owner of the beloved Berkley establishment happened on a bit of a whim. Kenrick said he was on his phone in September when he decided to search "restaurants for sale near me." Amici's popped up, and he scheduled a meeting with the owners within a couple of days.

"It's just been one of those things that just kind of seemed like it was gonna happen," he said.

Amici's was founded in 1993 by Jennifer's brother George Stark and Sal Parko in a strip mall in Royal Oak, according to its website. They moved to its present location in Berkley a few years later and added the "living room" martini bar. Stark passed the business to his sister in 2005.

Kenrick said he plans to add appetizers and desserts, such as a chocolate fudge three-layer cake, to the menu, as well as more shared plate options. Details are forthcoming.

He said the restaurant's 15 employees will be retained, and the business will continue as normal through the ownership transition.

Kenrick said his wife and kids have been frequent patrons of the pizza place, and he is excited to take the reins of the neighborhood staple.

"Amici's has always been one of our spots," Kenrick said.
