A toddler-toting gunman fleeing a crashed car forced a pizza delivery man to drive him to his girlfriend’s Pasadena home, where authorities then found a large cache of narcotics — but no sign of the suspect, law enforcement said.
Police on Tuesday night found the carjacking suspect grabbing items from his crashed SUV in the 8600 block of East Freeway and as he aimed what appeared to be a shotgun at the delivery driver who happened upon the wreck. The suspect, 25-year-old Elpidio Cruz Jr., then ordered the driver to “speed away” with him and the boy, HPD spokesman Victor Senties said.
Officers gave chase to the car with the delivery man behind the wheel, officials said.
The driver reached the 700 block of Shaver Street in Pasadena where Cruz bolted on foot, ditching his girlfriend’s child in the backseat, police said. The child was not harmed and Texas Child Protective Services is investigating, according to authorities.
Police briefly detained the driver but released him after he explained that “he was delivering pizzas when Cruz came up to his vehicle at gunpoint and forced him to drive off,” Senties said.
According to court records, Cruz called Shaver Street home following a 2018 arrest.
Police were unable to find Cruz in the area but soon learned the child’s mother, Brenda Riojas, 23, also lived there. She was home and agreed to allow the officers to continue looking for Cruz inside, but he was not there either. Cruz and Riojas are dating, Senties said.
A warrant was issued for Cruz’s arrest on charges of aggravated kidnapping, endangering a child and felon in possession of a weapon.
Inside the home — and in plain sight — was where the officers then found a large amount of unspecified narcotics.
Riojas was charged with three drug-related felonies in connection to the discovered narcotics. She was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon and is slated to be in court Thursday, court records show.
Cruz was found guilty of evading arrest in 2018 after being arrested that year by Pasadena Police Department, court records show. He has several arrests dating back to 2011 for drug possession, burglary, assault and robbery.
No prior arrest records could be found for Riojas in Harris County.
