Flattery, an 'Ameritalian' pizza joint serving hot dogs, is open in Preston Center in Dallas - The Dallas Morning News

A tiny new restaurant called Flattery has opened at Northwest Highway and Preston Road. The restaurant specializes in “Ameritalian” food, says owner Bushra “Heather” Ali, which means pizzas, hot dogs, pasta and boats — oval-shaped hunks of bread loaded with pizza-like toppings.

Flattery opened in the busy Preston Center on Dec. 10. It’s the passion project from Ali and her husband, who had a goal of operating a restaurant “that captures the flavors of the world,” Heather says in an email.

Some of their inspiration came from trips to Florence, Italy; New York City; Istanbul, Turkey; and parts of southeast Asia.

Technically, the restaurant’s pizzas are Neapolitan style. They’re cooked quickly in a hot oven, as is common among Neapolitan pizzas, though Heather says they intentionally broke the rules:

“We brought changes to that recipe to create a crust of our own,” she says. “It is thin and crispy from the edges ... And that’s why we call it Flattery: the art of flat bread.”

The restaurant’s 12-inch pizzas cost $12 to $17 and include traditional toppings like pepperoni, buffalo mozzarella and mushrooms on the Roma, as well as more non-traditional toppings like beef, jalapeno and a fried egg on the Texan. Flattery’s chefs also make a 10-inch vegetarian cauliflower crust pizza with Beyond Meat sausage, avocado, mozzarella and chickpeas. Pizzas are marketed as personal sized, though the 12-inchers can likely feed two people.

Flattery’s boats are more of a one-person meal. Toppings are unique. The Mughal is a cored-out bread bowl stuffed with spicy chicken, tzatziki and Moroccan sauce. The European comes with smoked turkey, cheese, relish and avocado. And the Ottoman has gyro meat, hummus, tahini, cheese and tzatziki. Boats cost $8 to $10.

Heather, a Dallas resident, isn’t Italian-American herself but says both countries “have very rich food backgrounds and I have wanted to create some kind of fusion between the two."

Flattery’s menu also includes hot dogs because Ali noticed many Dallas restaurants don’t serve gourmet hot dogs — and she’s right. Hot dogs come on a sweet brioche bun and cost $9. They come piled with ingredients such as pepperoni, mozzarella and marinara.

Flattery is at 6005 Berkshire Lane, Dallas.
