Michigan and Trumbull’s Detroit square pizza hopes to take a bite out of Buddy’s - MLive.com

DETROIT - There’s a new place in town to get your Detroit square pizza fix. Michigan and Trumbull has just opened at, you guessed it, the corner of Michigan and Trumbull in Detroit’s historic Corktown neighborhood.

Detroiters Kristen Calverley and Nathan Peck were living in Pittsburgh and said they missed Detroit-style square pizza. So they started making it themselves.

“The pizza there didn’t taste like we were used to. Dave has a pretty great background culinary-wise, so he started making square pizza at home," said Kristen Calverley. "We would make the pizza for our daughter’s birthday parties when we would have people over. We ordered our own pans. The feedback was so great that we said maybe this is the restaurant concept we should open in Pittsburgh.”

After opening their own restaurant in Pittsburgh for about a year and a half, the couple said they needed to be closer to their family in Detroit. So they brought their square pizza temporarily to the Fort Street Galley before landing at their permanent home at 1441 W. Elizabeth St. on January 29, 2020.

Kristen Calverley admits it’s hard to improve on Detroit-style pizza, like at the first Buddy’s in Downtown Detroit, which opened in late 2019, but they hope patrons will enjoy the love they put into their pies.

“Detroit style pizza has to be in the blue steel cast iron pan. It has to have the cheese cooked to the outer edge so you have that crispy crust. Why would you ever change those things? I think where we have taken our own liberties is with the toppings and flavor combinations. A lot of the Detroit institutions here are still doing traditional toppings and that has its place. We are just trying to play with that. You can still get a cheese and pepperoni, but we want you to get other fun stuff.”

We tried a traditional pepperoni and sausage pizza, a Buffalo chicken pizza and a “Boblo Boat” calzone. The pizza comes in one size of six square slices and can feed one very hungry person or two people looking for a snack. The calzone is also plenty for two people to share, but one person could devour it themselves.

Most of the pizzas are $15. You can make your own for $10 plus $1 for each veggie and $1.50 for each meat topping. The calzone is $10 for unlimited veggies and $12 for unlimited meats.

Michigan and Trumbull also serves alcohol and has a rooftop patio, which will be open during the warmer months of the year. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert. We indulged on the rich, flourless chocolate cake.

There may no longer be an old ballpark at this corner, but there’s a new Detroit square pizza place in town that’s worth trying.

Michigan and Trumbull hours:
