Ordering pizza for Super Bowl 2020? We ranked the top chains - pennlive.com

Snacking is a Super Bowl ritual.

For some, the party starts with hot and crispy Buffalo wings. For others, it’s chips and dips, while a select fanbase rallies behind subs and sandwiches.

Ahead of the big game Feb. 2, we tackled another crowd-pleaser – pizza. Fully knowing we’d still be eating and - for that matter inhaling Tums - if we had tapped independent shops in our unofficial survey, we stuck to chains.

We tested pizzas from the top four national carryout/delivery shops – Domino’s, Little Caesar’s, Papa John’s and Pizza Hut. To make it as fair as possible, we ordered plain cheese pizza only, no fancy crusts or extra toppings.

We scrutinized every last bite, weighing in on the sauce, cheese and crust as well as overall taste and appearance. Our tasting team included PennLive Life & Culture Editor Chris Mautner, Social Media Producer Megan Lavey-Heaton, Food and Dining Reporter Sue Gleiter.

So, which pie was crowned the best?

Little Caesars

Little Caesars dates back to 1959 and based in Detroit, Michigan.

No. 4

Little Caesar’s

You get what you pay for with pizza. Little Caesar’s sells $5 large pizzas, the cheapest in the bunch. Unfortunately, the chain doesn’t deliver to the PennLive office in Mechanicsburg, so we opted for carryout. While not horrible, this pizza didn’t leave a lasting impression. It’s a cut above school lunch pizza, but lacked any pizzaz. A good churn of Italian seasoning or red pepper flakes would help boost the flavor profile. If you’re feeding a crowd or watching your budget, order Little Caesar’s.

Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut was founded in 1958 and is known for its Italian American cuisine.

No. 3

Pizza Hut

We weren’t entirely disappointed. Pizza Hut makes a decent pie. The cheese was gooey. The dough was crusty. But the sauce? We could see it, but barely taste it. A pizza sauce should have some zest, some zing. Be sure to grab napkins, the grease level is a little high. So is the price. We paid $20.94 before tip for two medium plain $8 pizzas including tax and a $3.75 delivery charge.

Domino's

Domino's Pizza has been in business since 1960 and is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

No. 2

Domino’s

Not bad. Domino’s sauce impressed us with zesty, real-tomato taste. The crust was thick, and chewy, almost bread-like with a heavy-handed sprinkling of garlic and parmesan. (Perhaps, we accidentally ordered the hand-tossed garlic seasoned crust.) The cheese was visible, but unfortunately not memorable. Kudos to Scott, the delivery person who was super nice and asked plenty of questions when taking the order to ensure it arrived at the correct location. The price at $16.41 with tax for the 14-inch pie seemed high.

Papa John's

Papa John's Pizza is accompanied by garlic sauce and a pepper.

No. 1

Papa John’s

Papa John’s hit all the marks. It was the only pizza with a balance of sauce, crust and cheese. PLUS, garlic sauce and a pepper are a nice extra. The crust was thinner and not as doughy as the others. Sauce wasn’t super heavy. The cheese was melty and stretchy and didn’t taste fake. It’s pizza done right for a basic fast food pie. We had to do carryout as they don’t offer delivery to the PennLive office. The price was reasonable at $13.78 for a large cheese.
