Silver Lake street food sensation Elio’s Wood-Fired Pizza is facing an uncertain future after being shut down by the health department over the weekend. The mega-popular parking lot operation, which consisted of little more than a few folding tables and an Italian-made wood-fired pizza oven sitting on the back of a pickup truck, had been drawing crowds since last year, but now owner Eleodoro Lopez isn’t sure what to do next.
Eater confirmed the shut down of Elio’s on Friday night, after an officer from the health department showed up to inspect the stand. They concluded that Lopez would not be able to cook pizzas from the oven as it currently sat on the truck, and closed the stand. Lopez later posted about the closure notice to his more than 25,000 Instagram followers.
It’s unclear what will happen next for Lopez. He tells Eater that he and his team are currently waiting to find out about next steps from the city in order to be in compliance and continue cooking. That includes getting one of the city’s brand new official street vending permits, and allowing for another health inspection. Lopez says that he was not fined, only shut down, and that he would like to stay at his current popular spot, if possible.
Elio’s has gained a massive following thanks to a few big media hits over the past half-year or so, starting with a video on Insider. Others like Los Angeles Magazine and L.A. Taco have also done feature stories on Lopez in recent months, which usually means both new customers and new scrutiny when operating outside of the new street vending regulations.
Meanwhile, a slew of underground pizza spots have also begun to pop up around Los Angeles, from the long-running La Morra — currently doing an in-house residency at the former Kettle Black space in Silver Lake — to names like Earth Pizza, Forno Fama, and Lupa Cotta, among others.
