A Syracuse pizzeria has been accused of dropping raw chicken wings on the floor and still serving them to customers.
Matthew Grady tells Spectrum News that he was fired after allegedly showing his manager a video of employees mishandling food at Key Pizza, located next to a Valero gas station at 1135 Erie Blvd East.
“Like 400 wings dropped on the ground. They’re like nah I’m going to pick these up and use them. So they picked them up, washed them, used them, fried them,” Grady said.
Video he shared with Spectrum shows employees picking up the wings off the kitchen floor and agreeing to use them, despite dirt being visible on some of the meat.
“Throw them wings in the garbage, they were just on the ground," Grady said in the clip. ”You have to at least rinse them."
Key Pizza Owner Sarfraz Mann didn’t deny it happened, telling Spectrum that he would’ve made the employees throw the food away.
“He could’ve been handled a better way, but it wasn’t because they were doing their thing," Mann said. "We treat them good; have the quality, the service, the sanitization.”
Grady also accused the restaurant of leaving a tray used to stretch pizza dough on top of a trash can, and claimed employees are often dealing with slippery floors.
The owner insisted that his business has had a good record for seven years, claiming his staff only deviates from strict guidelines when the pizza shop is busy. The State Department of Agriculture and Markets told Spectrum that health inspectors visited Key Pizza on Friday and found no critical violations.
“There’s no violations,” Mann said. “When you got 20 tickets going, when you’re running on, that’s when you get caught.”
