These 3 N.J. cities are among the best for pizza lovers. We can name about a dozen more. - NJ.com

A new ranking lists Trenton as the eighth-best place in America for pizza lovers to live.

Uh, what?

Sure, New Jersey’s capital city birthed the thin, saucy pizzas known as Tomato Pies, and yes, we understand that this list from ApartmentGuide.com — of best cities for pizza lovers in the United States — focuses on quantity over quality, with the number of pizza restaurants compared to the total number of dining establishments.

But come on. Pizza is an art, not a science. The fact that two of the top three on the list are cities in Massachusetts (Worcester took the No. 1 spot) says it all the list clearly isn’t focusing on quality — we’ve made our thoughts on Boston pizza crystal clear — and this probably isn’t the best way to determine the best city for pizza-lovers.

Any city in America can pump out a bunch of Dominos pizzas and say they’re a pizza capital. But what about quality? We’re glad Trenton is on the list, but its two signature pizza places aren’t even in town anymore. To paraphrase the city’s slogan, Trenton used to make good pizza but now the world takes its DeLorenzo’s Tomato Pies and Papa’s Tomato Pies businesses down the road to Robbinsville (Papa’s, which opened in 1912, is the oldest pizza restaurant in the country).

What about Orange’s thin-crusted pizza nirvana Star Tavern? Or Santillo’s thick and saucy Sicilian in Elizabeth? Jersey City may be the hottest pizza city in the country right now, with Razza and Bread & Salt both boasting New York Times raves and lines out the door. And down the Shore, Asbury Park touts the holy trinity of Talula’s, Medusa and Porta.

Trenton got its lofty spot with 17.44 percent of its restaurants serving pizza and 53.59 pizza restaurants per 100,000 people, and the following write-up from ApartmentGuide.com:

New Jersey is home to six of the country's best pizza places. Not too far from New York City, Trenton boasts a big pizza scene, with 17.44 percent of its restaurants serving pizza.

Don't miss the Trenton-style Tomato Pie, a thin crust pizza topped first with cheese, and then finished with a lightly crushed tomato. This style comes from Philly but made its way to Trenton. One of the ones that took a spot on the best pizza list is Delorenzo's Tomato Pies, a mainstay in Trenton since 1947.

You can live in bustling Trenton and find a good one-bedroom for $1,178 a month.

Toms River came in at 30th on the list with 15.27 percent of its restaurants serving pizza and 33.08 pizza restaurants per 100,000 people. Paterson was tied for 34th with 15.10 percent of its restaurants serving pizza and 19.91 pizza restaurants per 100,000 people. Patsy’s Tavern, located in Paterson, is one of the most iconic pizza restaurants in New Jersey.

It’s nice that New Jersey made this list. But we’ve never been about a lot of pizza in the Garden State. We’re about good pizza.
