CHELSEA, MI -- The odds were against us.
There were two monstrous pizzas, a vicious crowd of tiny hecklers, sweaty brows, elevated heart rates and not enough stretchy pants.
Two teams of MLive reporters from The Ann Arbor News and Jackson Citizen Patriot attacked the beast created by Thompson’s Pizzeria in Chelsea, but suffered a crushing defeat.
There would be no free pizza.
Marty Slagter, Taylor DesOrmeau, Riley Murdock, Matt Durr, Ryan Zuke, and Sam Dodge made a valiant effort to annihilate a pair of 13-pound-plus, stuffed-crust pizza. They grunted, rubbed their stomachs, hopped in place to force the food down and absorbed jeers and criticism from a group of children who gathered to watch, only to finish with more than 100 ounces of mangled pie left on their plates.
The challenge was to eat a 30-inch, stuffed-crust pizza with three toppings in 30 minutes. Slagter, DesOrmeau and Murdock finished with 51 ounces of food left. Durr, Zuke and Dodge left behind 54 ounces.
The two teams were able to devour half of each pizza in the first 10 minutes, before losing momentum once the sweats started to kick in.
The monster pizza challenge at Thompson’s runs through October every year. The massive pizzas cost $49.95, unless you complete the challenge, in which case the pie is on the house.
MLive’s bill, with tip, came to $125.90.
Here is what each contestant had to say after the contest.
“I got fatter. I literally got fatter,” said Zuke, who fought through the pain of the aftermath and returned to the newsroom to cover a breaking sports story.
“I’ve been wanting to eat a 13-pound pizza since I was a little kid. All these years later, it feels great to realize a dream, even if we did come up a little short," Slagter said.
“Immediately after, it felt like there was a large rock inside me. It didn’t help matters when my roommates’ cat jumped on my stomach when I got home,” DesOrmeau said.
“I feel better than I expected. My wife says I look bloated as hell,” said Durr, who came prepared with an antacid and sweat pants, but couldn’t make his way through the crust.
“I’m in a self-imposed cheese coma,” said Dodge, who contributed admirable to the cause by eating seven slices.
“I felt fine afterwards, good even. Now I’m suffering just a bit. Worth it, though,” Murdock said.
