Doorbell signals arrival of Vinny’s pizza and wine - Houston Chronicle

Home-delivered pizza has been around for a while. Home-delivered pizza with a nice, carefully vetted bottle of wine, however, is newer-world stuff, certainly for the Houston area.

But SB 1450, signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott last summer, has made it legal, and Vinny’s, the Agricole Hospitality-owned pizzeria in EaDo, has decided to take full advantage. Undaunted by a smattering of logistical hurdles, sommelier Curtis Sibley has put together a list of about 100 wines that he’ll happily send along with your food order, assuming you live inside the Loop.

To be clear, the new law stipulates that food must be part of the delivery. And, for the moment, the order — for a minimum of $18 — must be placed by phone (713-750-9433), although full online capabilities are coming soon. The menu and the wine list can be found at agricolehospitality.com. Delivery hours are 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Tuesdays-Thursdays, 11 a.m.-midnight Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sundays.

Sibley, who has his Level 2 certification through the Court of Master Sommeliers, personally favors what he calls “light, fresh modern wines” made from organically or at least sustainably grown grapes by boutique producers. Five of his favorites, intended to pair precisely with Vinny’s pies, are featured here. Overall, prices range from $24 for Seis de Luberri Rioja from Spain to a $350 magnum of Vouette & Sorbée Blanc d’ Argile. A couple dozen beers are on offer, too.

“We’ve all been there,” Sibley said. “You’re at home and plan to order pizza for dinner. But you’re out of wine, and the last thing you want to do is go run to the store.”

ON HOUSTONCHRONICLE.COM: Pizza is pushing in new directions in Houston

An interior designer in his previous career, the 37-year-old North Texas native has lived in Houston since 2012. He joined Agricole in June as the floor manager/sommelier for the group’s trio of EaDo restaurants — Indianola, where he bases himself, and Miss Carousel are the others — after stints with the Federal Grill, The Tasting Room and Tony Vallone’s now closed Ciao Bello.

Sibley conceded initially going from designing furniture to curating a wine list was “a deep dive, a really daunting task, but I kind of stuck my toe in anyway.” After earning his entry-level sommelier certification in 2017, he was hooked, “turning right back around and getting my Level 2 a year later.”

Vinny’s wines-for-delivery options remain a work in progress and, for now, closely mirror the on-premises list: “Trying to find out what offers clients the best value and what make sense for all parties involved has been fluid.”

Four wines that speak to Sibley, and their pizza pairings

Zum Martin Sepp Gruner Veltliner

This organic offering from Michael and Freya Martin — their winery is on the northern outskirts of Vienna, and Zum Martin Sepp is a small inn nearby for which they have long made wine — “is lively, wonderfully, acidic and well balanced due to its substantial minerality. This was once only produced for the Austrian market, but we now get to enjoy the fruits of their labor stateside. Paired with a Green Machine pizza (curly kale, red and caramelized onion, sweet onion purée, French feta and Parmesan) or Veggie Supreme (red peppers, mushrooms, charred broccoli, red onions, French feta, tomato sauce and provolone), this vibrant Gruner will provide a crisp, refreshing counterpoint to your slice(s).”

Henri Perrusset Mâcon-Villages

“A versatile wine from Henri Perrusset, its chardonnay grapes grow in “the compacted limestone of Farges. It’s delightful alongside the C.B.R. (charcoal chicken, fat-back bacon, red peppers, tomato sauce, Italian parsley, mozzarella and ranch dressing). Notes of pear and honey give way gracefully to the lengthy, mineral finish. This unoaked chardonnay has something for everyone and over-delivers for any pizza with a white sauce base.”

Price: $40

Château du Petit Thouars Les Georges Chinon

“A sustainable offering from the Loire Valley, this juicy expression of cabernet franc will spoil your senses when paired with Vinny’s Pepperoni pizza. A medium-bodied red wine with elegant tannins, the Les Georges Chinon delivers beautiful floral notes on the nose, and follows through with dusty cherry, pomegranate and cranberry on the palate. We love this wine at Indianola. Now Vinny’s patrons can get it delivered, too.”

Price: $30

Cantina della Volta Rimosso Lambrusco di Sorbara

“Bubbles make us happy! Cantina della Volta near Modena produces a red, dry semi-sparkling wine that offers fresh, juicy fruit with an elegance that is unrivaled in the region. With just the right amount of earth, the Rimosso offers finessed fruit, pronounced acidity and a perfect fruit structure that will make any of our pizzas more enjoyable.”
