DETROIT - The home of the “original” Detroit-style pizza has just opened its first restaurant in Downtown Detroit. Buddy’s Pizza held its grand opening Wednesday at its new location in the Madison Building, located at 1565 Broadway St.
The Michigan pizza chain also held a celebration last night to support the Motown Museum. Buddy’s donated all sales from opening day to the museum for its numerous community programs which include summer camps.
“Since 1946, Buddy’s Pizza has grown alongside Detroit, remaining committed to the city and the community,” said Burton Heiss, Buddy’s Pizza CEO. “Opening the downtown location feels like we’re truly coming home, and the support from the community has been overwhelming. This location further cements our roots in Detroit – a city that helped invent the Original Detroit-Style Pizza.”
Along with the four-slice or eight-slice square pizzas Buddy’s is known for, this location will cater to the fast-paced, downtown lifestyle by serving pizza slices by the square as well as sandwiches, wraps, and salads to grab and go. The full menu also includes soups, pastas and burgers.
There is also plenty of seating inside for people who want to dine-in. The 7,000-square-foot restaurant has room for 225 guests. There will also be an outdoor patio open during the warmer months of the year.
This is now the 16th Buddy’s Pizza location and the second one in Detroit. The original restaurant, which opened in 1946, remains at Six Mile and Conant. Buddy’s opened its first restaurant outside of the Detroit area earlier this year in Grand Rapids.
