We’ll find hundreds of ways those four words work together for 52 Weeks of Pizza, our new yearlong series featuring a different San Antonio pizza place every week. The series launches today with Big Lou’s Pizza, a South Side favorite for 20 years. Read the Big Lou’s report here.
The pizza series continues the collaboration of Chuck Blount and Mike Sutter, the Taste Team writers behind 2019’s 52 Weeks of Burgers and 2018’s 52 Weeks of BBQ. We’ll publish a new pizza report every Sunday in the Taste section and on Fridays at our subscriber website ExpressNews.com/Pizza.

Continuing the tradition of burgers and barbecue, every pizza place will get a rating: Once was enough (for the underperformers); solid neighborhood option (for the reliable standbys); or worth a drive (for the superstars).
We’ll try a handful of pizzas at each place, from the standards to the specialties to whatever catches our eye. Then we’ll pick the best pizza and give a rundown of the rest, both good and bad.

The series will draw from pizza restaurants in the greater San Antonio area, including Bexar County and the counties that surround it. We’ll focus on the places that make pizza their mission, not just a lonely corner of the menu, and we’ll steer clear of the national chains.
