CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Pizza is one of America’s favorite foods. It’s easy to pop a frozen pizza in the oven when short on time, after a long day of work, or when you have to make something quick for your family.
The Cleveland’s Best team at cleveland.com has been hard at work the last couple of months taste-testing more than 100 different frozen pizzas. We have hit 11 local grocery stores so far, buying two kinds of pizzas from every brand we can find in freezer cases, and our search is not over.
We have tried extra cheese pizzas, pepperoni, gluten-free, vegan, stuffed crust, and everything in between. Who knew we would find so many different brands and options?
As we continue sampling grocery store pizzas this month, we thought we’d give you a peek at our favorites so far. The taste-test panel consists of reporters Brenda Cain and Yadi Rodriguez and manager Kristen Davis.
Look for our complete rankings of every pizza sampled in the near future.
For this project we purchased a Presto Pizzazz Pizza Cooker from Amazon, and have been very impressed and pleased with its performance and ability to keep up with the toll we’ve put it through. If you make a lot of frozen pizzas at home -- or your office like us! -- consider investing in one of these.
Outsiders Pizza Company, Quad Cities Style Pizza Jalapeno + Bacon
Where we bought it: Target in Westlake for $8.99
Box says: Damn Good! There’s malt in the dough, which gives the crust a nuttier and slightly sweet flavor.
Cain says: Finally found one I like! Definitely has the heat, but not so much that you will be overwhelmed. Sweetness of the sauce is a nice balance to the jalapeno.
Red Baron, Classic Crust Mexican Style Pizza
Where we bought it: Marc’s in Lakewood for $2.98
Box says: Not too thick. Not too thin. With just the right amount of crunch. Calm mealtime chaos with the pizza the whole family loves.
Cain says: The sausage got a bit lost in the spiciness of the sauce, but it is quite tasty. The tortilla chips added a lot to it. A unique twist on a traditional go-to.
Mandia, Garlic and Cheeses
Where we bought it: Earth Fare in Fairview Park for $6.99
Box says: Handmade Pizza Napoletana. Product of Italy. Imported stone baked Italian Pizza. No preservatives, artificial colors or flavors.
Davis says: Close your eyes and you can imagine yourself in Italy enjoying this pizza. Aside from not tasting like it’s from a freezer case, it is authentic. The best part is the crust, with a good dusting of flour and a rich taste. I recommend shortening the cooking time because the crust was a little hard for my taste. But it still was oh-so-good. On top of that delicious Italian bread was a mix of four cheeses and garlic. That may sound plain and boring but for a white pizza is was divine.
Table 5, Crispy Cornmeal Crust Four Cheese Pizza
Where we bought it: Lucky’s Market in Cleveland for $6.99
Box says: Thin and Crispy pan style pizza made with our signature wheat flour and cornmeal crust.
Davis says: The very first pizza we sampled remains one of my favorites. I have to start with the cornmeal crust. It made the pizza. Dense and chewy in the middle, it’s unique and tasted as advertised as a hybrid of cornmeal and some traditional flour. The sauce also was special and tasted more like a vodka sauce than traditional marinara-like pizza sauce. The cheese was plentiful and had a hearty, slightly salty taste. I found this brand at Fresh Thyme in Mayfield Heights and bought one for my home freezer to enjoy amid all the pizza tastings. That should tell you something about how good it is.
Devour Pizza, Creamy Garlic Supreme
Where we bought it: Meijer in Avon for $6.99
Box says: All food should be mouth-watering. Period. End of story. So, in each of our meals, we dial up the taste. Max out the flavor. Turn up the texture. Tender meats and creamy sauces. Crispy crust and gooey cheeses. Spicy, smoky or savory, sometimes sweet. Always ridiculously good.
Rodriguez says: I thought this pizza looked as good as it did pictured on the box, if not better. The cheese and and sauce dripped over the sides as it cooked and didn’t dry out. The garlic sauce had a little kick to it and was flavorful and creamy. For being a thicker pizza it was not doughy or chewy and had a nice crunch on the ends. This pizza also had no shortage of toppings, you tasted some of everything in every bite. I would definitely recommend this one and would try other varieties.
Outsiders Pizza Company, Detroit Style Pizza Three Cheese
Where we bought it: Target in Fairview Park for $8.99
Box says: Damn Good! There’s malt in the dough, which gives the crust a nuttier and slightly sweet flavor.
Rodriguez says: This rectangular, thick, crisp crust pizza did not disappoint. They did not skimp on the cheese topping either. The sauce was one of the tastiest that I’ve tried and there was just the right amount. The crust was buttery and light like a croissant despite its thick appearance. Great choice for cheese pizza lovers. They got this description right, I must agree it was Damn Good!
That’s all for now. We will be back with pizza-by-pizza rankings once all the frozen pies are baked and sampled.
