Pizza Hut Apologized After Employees Reportedly Told A Students With Special Needs To Hurry Up For ‘Regular’ Customers - Delish.com

Pizza Hut has apologized to a group of students with special needs after their reported mistreatment at a franchise location in Ripley, TN. Allegedly, the group of students, who were accompanied by a teacher, were rushed out before the "regular" people came in.

The story first broke when the mother of one of the students, Heather Bensch, posted a photo on Facebook explaining her disappointment with the restaurant's treatment of her daughter and the entire group: "So McKaela's class went to Pizza Hut in Ripley today, and were not treated like 'regular' people," the post started off. "Pizza Hut, please define to me who a "regular" person is. No, better yet, please explain why my child and her classmates weren't at least given the 'regular' service that anyone else would receive?"

The post has been shared over 900 times, and Bensch updated the caption once she received more information from those who were at Pizza Hut when the incident occurred. One of those sources said the group was advised to clean their own tables, get their own refills, and use paper plates before the "regular" people came into the pizza joint.

According to an NBC News report, the group had a reservation, so Pizza Hut was seemingly well aware of the number of people they would be serving. "The store knew beforehand which particular group was coming by way of reservation," Bensch told NBC, "which tells me that this was not a misunderstanding, but rather this particular Pizza Hut's reputation of discrimination coming to light."

A Pizza Hut spokesperson told Delish in a statement that this particular incident does not reflect on the company's values:

We’re aware of the concerns that were raised and in no way does this reflect our standard of serving the community and providing every guest with excellent service. Our local franchisee has been in contact with the school principal and superintendent to offer our apologies to the students and teachers and will be meeting with them this week. Restaurant management will also be reinforcing our expectations with employees at the store to ensure that our standards of service are upheld going forward. We hope to welcome the class back into the restaurant soon.
