If you're attending CES in January and fancy a slice, don't be surprised if the 12-inch pizza you bite into was produced by a robot.
As BusinessWire reports, the Seattle-based company Picnic has been chosen by event hospitality company Centerplate to handle pizza production at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from Jan. 7-10. The big draw of Picnic's tech is the capability of this robot to produce up to 300 custom 12-inch pizzas ever hour.
The Picnic robot combines a freestanding food production device with "software, cloud and deep learning technology" to produce pizza at an incredible rate. As it's modular, the robot can be configured to fit in a range of locations and only requires minimal training to operate as the intelligent machine does the bulk of the work.
Steve Pangburn, CEO of Centerplate, commented, ""Picnic's automated food assembly platform has shown an ability to enhance quality and speed of service for our kitchen operations ... Our initial pilot with Picnic was very positive and their differentiated capabilities are proving beneficial. We look forward to introducing Picnic to the Las Vegas Convention Center in January and helping them scale their technology in an effective way."
Although the Picnic robot at CES will be focused on making pizza, it's not limited to only serving the Italian dish. A configuration tweak opens up the ability to produce "Bun, bowl, tortilla or plate" according to Picnic CEO Clayton Wood. Wood aims to get Picnic into a growing number of locations and offers custom design software solutions to help integrate the robotic food production into existing businesses. After that, it's just a monthly fee to Picnic for all maintenance and software updates.
