Free food for Super Bowl LIV! Here's where to get free wings, pizza deals and free delivery - USA TODAY

Pizza, wings, subs and beer will be in hot demand Sunday.

All are popular choices for Super Bowl Sunday but the chicken wing will be the MVP with 1.4 billion expected to be eaten, according to the National Chicken Council.

This Sunday is likely to be one of the biggest party days of the year. According to the National Retail Federation's 2020 Super Bowl survey, nearly 194 million adults said they had plans for the game, which pits the San Francisco 49ers against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV from Miami.

Brad Plothow, vice president of corporate marketing and communications for Womply, a small business software provider, says expect crowds at restaurants that specialize in pizza and wings.

“If you’re planning to order in food for your Super Bowl celebration, be sure you plan ahead, as it’s one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants that serve pizza and chicken wings,” Plothow said.

Just wing it: Chicken wings are Super Bowl LIV's MVP with Americans expected to eat a record 1.4 billion wings

Restaurants, Pizza Shops Prepare for Busy Super Bowl Weekend - 9&10 News

The big game is days away and thousands of Americans are getting ready to watch Super Bowl 54 over food with friends.

It’s one of the biggest days of the year for local bars, restaurants and pizza places.

Thirsty Fish in Downtown Traverse City expects big crowds.

“Super Bowl Sunday to a sports bar is one of those iconic days of the year,” said Thirsty Fish owner Don Walters. “Sports bars pretty much own Super Bowl Sunday.”

Pizza shops don’t do too bad either.

Domino’s Pizza says it’s one of their top five busiest delivery days of the year. They sell 2 million pizzas, which is 40% busier than a normal Sunday.

In Traverse City, many shops will also be getting busy cranking out hundreds of pizzas for hungry fans.

Mancino’s Pizza & Grinders is ready to put up some big numbers this weekend.

“On Sunday, we’ll probably toss probably 60 or 50 extra larges,” said Mancino’s employee Brandon Gamelin.

They’ll also go through plenty of everything else on the menu, including wings.

The National Chicken Council predicts Americans will eat 1.4 billion wings on Sunday. Last year, Mancino’s didn’t have enough to meet demand, but they say they won’t be making that mistake again.

“Double up on wings, make sure you’re getting everything re-stocked and ready to go,” said Gamelin.

So no matter who comes out on top in Miami, local restaurants will win big.

“It will be a good Super Bowl Sunday for sure,” said Gamelin.

Center Court Pizza & Brew to open locations in Klein, Spring - Houston Chronicle

A Houston-based pizza chain is continuing its expansion around the loop with new restaurants opening soon in Klein and Spring.

Center Court Pizza & Brew is a Houston-based bar and pizza place with nine locations in the greater Houston area. They are about to add two new restaurants in the coming months—one in Vintage Park opening in a few weeks at 138 Vintage Park Blvd., and one in Spring opening in June at 24309 Gosling Road.

Related: Business roundups: Restaurants opening in Spring

The new expansions came down to need, Center Court Pizza & Brew Owner Mark Dominguez said. He saw the need to expand around the loop of suburbs surrounding Houston.

“We want to eventually kind of do the whole loop connected all the way through League City,” Dominguez said. “So, we’ll go to Spring and hopefully one on I-45, the Woodlands area, and eventually bring it down to Beltway, 290 and try to make a loop of stores.”

The hole his restaurant is filling is the need for a sports bar-style family restaurant, according to Dominguez. He said the family atmosphere is an important element of the restaurant. Three of his restaurants have playgrounds, as will the Spring location.

“We’re in the suburbs, a lot of kids, there’s a need for kids’ entertainment,” Dominguez said. “I’m a dad of three myself and for me to go out and have a pizza and have an adult beverage, it gets kind of hard.”

His stores are equipped for that, Dominguez said, where parents can have a beer and watch the game while their kids are on the playground or in the arcade.

Pizzas from Center Court are made using all homemade ingredients, he said, on hand-tossed dough. Along with pizza, they have pizza rolls, salads, calzones and tacos. Everything, including the sauces, is made in-house, Dominguez said.

“It’s one of those pizzas that you eat the whole crust, you’ll eat the whole pizza on this one,” Dominguez said.

The restaurant doesn’t just serve standard brews. Dominguez said they’ve had craft beer since opening their first store in Pearland 13 years ago, including Karbach and other IPAs. They have a total of 19 beers on tap, as well as cocktails like martinis and Cuba Libres.

52 Weeks of Pizza: Sofia’s Pizzeria on San Antonio’s far West Side rocks a Philly cheesesteak pie - San Antonio Express-News

Rating: Solid neighborhood option

Pizza might be the official food of rock ’n’ roll. It is at Sofia’s Pizzeria on the Far West Side, anyway, where Bad Company, Queen and the Black Crowes hold court, thanks to classic rock radio piped in direct from Pittsburgh, owner Alan White’s old stomping grounds.

Named for White’s daughter, Sofia’s Pizzeria opened in October, operating from a seven-table joint notched into a Potranco Road strip center that includes a convenience store, gas station and a Mexican restaurant.

The menu spans the casual Italian cafe playlist: pepperoni rolls, lasagna, calzones, salads, wings, chicken parmigiana, spaghetti, meatball subs and, more to the point, pizza. You know, the classics. Rock on.

Best pizza: Besides classic rock radio, another import from White’s home state is the spirit of the Philly cheesesteak on a pizza loaded with shaved sirloin, onions, peppers, cheese, mushrooms and a white sauce that artfully bridges the gap between sandwich and pizza ($19.99 for a 14-inch). The crust helps to foster that relationship, baked between 575 and 600 degrees in a Marsal deck oven for even toasting and a bite like fresh bread.

On ExpressNews.com: 52 Weeks of Pizza launches search for San Antonio’s best pizza restaurants

Sofia’s Pizzeria

Location: 15284 Potranco Road, 210-354-7618, Facebook: @SofiasPizzeriaTx

Hours: 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday-Saturday

Other pizzas: The namesake Sofi’s Pie brings the guilty pleasure of pizza and the wholesome aesthetic of a salad together on one pizza, with fresh spinach and baby portobello mushrooms sharing space with tender chicken and ricotta cheese ($19.99 for a 14-inch).

The Supreme’s a more chaotic thing, a freewheeling collection of pepperoni, sausage and Canadian bacon for strength and mushrooms, bell peppers, olives and onions for character. A good pie, but one that stretched my willingness to pay a penny shy of $20 for a 14-inch pizza.

If value’s a thing, lunch offers a remedy from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, when a slice with a salad and a drink costs $7.49. The downside is that you pick from whatever slices are sitting in the case, and my slice of the Luau pie with smoked bacon, Canadian bacon and pineapple was stiff and dry, even after a run through the oven.

Salted Dough brings inventive pizza menu to Broadview Heights - cleveland.com

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Salted Dough is much more than a pizzeria. The new Broadview Heights eatery, which opened two months ago and celebrated its grand opening on Monday, Jan. 27, also serves up a variety of gnocchi, fish dishes and inventive gelato flavors.

However, pizza is the focus here -- and the name, “Salted Dough,” comes from the nicely salted crust that chef and business owner Jeff Fisher has devised.

“We do a thinner crust, so you get more crispiness and flavor with the garlic oil, pecorino and romano and pink Himalayan sea salt that we put on all the crusts,” he said.

Salted Dough, located at 9174 Broadview Road, serves up massive pizza-by-the-slice options for lunch, but also smaller whole pies with like “Pork Conundrum,” “Breakfast for Dinner” and “Peruvian Chicken.” Each is topped with a creative mix of fresh ingredients and, when it’s the right season, toppings that are locally sourced from area farmers.

“It’s like you’re eating food like you’d be eating 100 years ago,” Fisher said. “Nothing’s out of a bag. We don’t have a microwave here. The only thing that comes out of a can is tomatoes.”

Beyond the pizza, Salted Dough’s menu reflects Fisher’s history as a chef and food lover. Originally from New Hampshire, Fisher spent his childhood chasing skate -- a type of winged fish -- on the beach. Later, he went to school at Ashland University to take part in the school’s athletic programs and to study culinary arts.

He went on to work at Cleveland restaurant staples like Johnny’s Downtown, Johnny’s Bar on Fulton, The Metropolitan, Sushi Rock, Touch Supper Club and more.

Along the way, Fisher opened a small catering business, which morphed into work as a consultant. About eight years ago, he said he did a consulting project to help create Crust, a popular Tremont pizzeria.

That project may have gotten the wheels turning in Fisher’s plans as a restaurateur -- though, he said, “I had no intention at all of opening a pizza place.”

Fisher has always loved pizza. He said he made his first pizza at age seven with his mother, and since then he’s travelled around the country, visiting the best pizzerias he could find, pulling together influences to create a crispy, flavorful pizza.

With Salted Dough, Fisher has incorporated more passions than just his love of food. The restaurant’s interior, designed by Fisher and his wife, features old wooden beams recovered from barns around Ohio in its hanging light fixtures.

“I’ve always loved old antique wood that dates back to the Declaration of Independence,” Fisher said. “I have a fascination for how well stuff was built. Everything nowadays is made to break, whereas that was made to last. It withstood the test of time.”

The restaurant’s interior design -- what Fisher calls “farmhouse chic” -- consists of rustic tables and chairs, and pieces of barn wood used for bathroom doors and sliding doors. A full bar rests to one side, serving freshly made cocktails and a mix of local beers.

Salted Dough has a small patio that Fisher will open in the warmer months. He hopes to host concerts outside and, eventually, to expand the patio to accommodate more diners.

And that extra space might be called for. So far, Salted Dough has made itself into a popular destination for local diners and more distant pizza lovers alike.

We made pizza. We made robots. Why not robot pizza? - Chron.com

What is it about robots and pizza?

A robot that bakes the well-loved meal was a big hit at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month, wowing onlookers as it prepared 300 pies an hour. The developer, a Seattle-based startup called Picnic, insists that pizza is only the beginning: “Our system will soon be able to make a wide variety of foods including sandwiches, salads, bowls and more.”

And why not? After all, robot bartenders, including for the home, are all the rage (although the top-of-the-line model will set you back the price of a luxury car). Moreover, with labor costs rising and margins falling, no one doubts that the future of the food service industry is automation, both behind the counter and in the kitchen.

Still, there seems to be something special about robots and pizza. Domino’s, the world’s biggest pizza chain, touts its “autonomous delivery vehicle,” which is being tested in Houston. Big rival Little Caesar holds a patent on its own “apparatus ... for assembling pizza” — that is, a pizza-making robot. And learned papers in serious journals explain the best way to teach an autonomous system to roll pizza ... or even to select ingredients.

Well, of course. The world market for freshly baked pizza is nearing $150 billion a year, according to a 2019 report in PMQ Pizza Magazine, an industry trade publication. The largest share — more than $50 billion — is in the U.S., but the fastest growth over the next five years is expected in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. In China alone, annual sales are forecast to grow 21.6 percent by 2024.

That’s a lot of demand, but there’s also a lot of competition. For sellers of freshly baked pizza, as for others in the food service industry, rising labor costs and thinning margins make increased automation inevitable. Still, there’s no reason just yet for technophobes to panic — or, for that matter, for technophiles to celebrate. We have some time yet before being overwhelmed by the pizza-robot apocalypse.

Not so fast

Picnic’s automaton is undeniably fun and impressive to watch. It looks good too, sleek and unindustrial. One observer wrote that the robot resembles “a white, kitchen-sized iPhone.” It’s easy to see why the device has earned such fawning coverage — and why Picnic has already signed up some big customers.

Still, there are reasons to be cautious in our enthusiasm. First among them is the elephant in the room: the cautionary tale of Zume. Headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., Zume was a legitimate unicorn, with the clever idea of baking pizzas in special ovens inside its trucks, using GPS technology to determine when to heat the pies so that they would arrive fresh and hot at the customer’s doorstep.

SoftBank’s single investment in the startup in 2018, which was greater than the total amount raised by all other robot-food-preparation startups combined over the previous five years, implied a value for the company of over $2 billion. The company even earned a cameo on the HBO comedy “Silicon Valley.” As recently as November Vox Recode predicted that Zume might soon be worth $4 billion.

Oops.

Zume shuttered its pizza operation in January, cutting 172 jobs in Mountain View and 80 more in San Francisco. Going forward, Zume plans to focus now on sustainable food packaging.

Here’s a second reason for caution: Despite heady media claims that pizza is now being made by artificial intelligence (and a similar suggestion from the company itself), Picnic’s device doesn’t quite earn that encomium.

Melanie Mitchell of the Sante Fe Institute, argues in her excellent 2019 book “Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans” that what’s crucial to humanlike thought is the ability to apply common sense, a challenge researchers find difficult. We should avoid crying “AI” every time a device masters a particular task previously done by humans, even when the task is complex, like playing chess ... or making pizza.

The easy part

And Picnic’s robot, though quite ingenious, isn’t artificially intelligent just yet. Here’s radio station KIRO:

“The human touch is still very much required for the machine to function. It has a vision system that reads the size and shape of the dough, and places the toppings and sauce on using a conveyor belt, but the dough and sauce must be made by actual human beings, who also have to put the pizza in the oven.”

This is impressive but not revolutionary. Automated assembly lines for automobiles do nearly as much, and have been around longer. As KIRO puts it, “The pizza-making robot is really good at making the easiest part of the pizza.”

But a system need not be artificially intelligent to be efficient and useful, and it’s easy to believe that Picnic is pointing the way toward the future. Picnic certainly isn’t Zume. For one thing, Picnic’s system is simpler. It lacks articulating arms and consists instead of “a series of modular, customizable food dispensers.” Even if the device currently performs only the easiest part of the operation, one assumes that its capabilities will improve over time. For another, unlike Zume, Picnic isn’t in the pizza business; it’s in the robot business, leasing devices to customers, tailoring it to their needs and setting it up at no charge, all in return for a monthly fee.

With so many restaurants struggling to pay their bills, and with technology improving all the time, it’s fair to say that the future of pizza (and of the rest of food service) belongs to the bots.

Ordering pizza for Super Bowl 2020? We ranked the top chains - pennlive.com

Snacking is a Super Bowl ritual.

For some, the party starts with hot and crispy Buffalo wings. For others, it’s chips and dips, while a select fanbase rallies behind subs and sandwiches.

Ahead of the big game Feb. 2, we tackled another crowd-pleaser – pizza. Fully knowing we’d still be eating and - for that matter inhaling Tums - if we had tapped independent shops in our unofficial survey, we stuck to chains.

We tested pizzas from the top four national carryout/delivery shops – Domino’s, Little Caesar’s, Papa John’s and Pizza Hut. To make it as fair as possible, we ordered plain cheese pizza only, no fancy crusts or extra toppings.

We scrutinized every last bite, weighing in on the sauce, cheese and crust as well as overall taste and appearance. Our tasting team included PennLive Life & Culture Editor Chris Mautner, Social Media Producer Megan Lavey-Heaton, Food and Dining Reporter Sue Gleiter.

So, which pie was crowned the best?

Little Caesars

Little Caesars dates back to 1959 and based in Detroit, Michigan.

No. 4

Little Caesar’s

You get what you pay for with pizza. Little Caesar’s sells $5 large pizzas, the cheapest in the bunch. Unfortunately, the chain doesn’t deliver to the PennLive office in Mechanicsburg, so we opted for carryout. While not horrible, this pizza didn’t leave a lasting impression. It’s a cut above school lunch pizza, but lacked any pizzaz. A good churn of Italian seasoning or red pepper flakes would help boost the flavor profile. If you’re feeding a crowd or watching your budget, order Little Caesar’s.

Pizza Hut

Pizza Hut was founded in 1958 and is known for its Italian American cuisine.

No. 3

Pizza Hut

We weren’t entirely disappointed. Pizza Hut makes a decent pie. The cheese was gooey. The dough was crusty. But the sauce? We could see it, but barely taste it. A pizza sauce should have some zest, some zing. Be sure to grab napkins, the grease level is a little high. So is the price. We paid $20.94 before tip for two medium plain $8 pizzas including tax and a $3.75 delivery charge.

Domino's

Domino's Pizza has been in business since 1960 and is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

No. 2

Domino’s

Not bad. Domino’s sauce impressed us with zesty, real-tomato taste. The crust was thick, and chewy, almost bread-like with a heavy-handed sprinkling of garlic and parmesan. (Perhaps, we accidentally ordered the hand-tossed garlic seasoned crust.) The cheese was visible, but unfortunately not memorable. Kudos to Scott, the delivery person who was super nice and asked plenty of questions when taking the order to ensure it arrived at the correct location. The price at $16.41 with tax for the 14-inch pie seemed high.

Papa John's

Papa John's Pizza is accompanied by garlic sauce and a pepper.

No. 1

Papa John’s

Papa John’s hit all the marks. It was the only pizza with a balance of sauce, crust and cheese. PLUS, garlic sauce and a pepper are a nice extra. The crust was thinner and not as doughy as the others. Sauce wasn’t super heavy. The cheese was melty and stretchy and didn’t taste fake. It’s pizza done right for a basic fast food pie. We had to do carryout as they don’t offer delivery to the PennLive office. The price was reasonable at $13.78 for a large cheese.

Pizza Doughnais adds some Sicilian style to Portland’s ‘world-class’ pizza scene - OregonLive

You could spend a chunk of your 20s in New York City, even marry a Sicilian woman living there, and still not remember off-hand the distinction between two familiar square slices: the Grandma — a simple pan pizza made by immigrant Nonna’s themselves (Scottie’s Pizza Parlor’s DeFino is the definitive version in town) — and the Sicilian.

Pizza Doughnais, a stylish new Brooklyn neighborhood pizzeria from Los Angeles émigrés Justin and Jessica Donais, specializes in the latter, the thick, slow-risen, focaccia-esque squares found on the island of Sicily itself.

Justin, a freelance cinematographer, caught the pizza bug a few years ago, developing an obsession that took him from pizza industry expos to Italy itself and back again. After hosting pizza pop-ups in Los Angeles, their former home, Justin and Jessica moved to Portland to be closer to the exciting pizza scene here.

“I’ve had a lot of pizza in my travels and Portland is world class,” Justin Donais says. “We wanted to join the party but bring something different.”

They found a small storefront in a modern Brooklyn neighborhood building with no public restroom and just enough room to “Tetris” in their oven, rolling racks and other equipment. Jessica Donais, who previously ran a graphic design and branding studio, gave the space its “modern mom and pop” feel, with forest green and rust red accents nodding to the Italian flag and a funky Italian font providing the bubbly, rectangular logo.

Meanwhile, Justin Donais perfected his recipe for a “very digestible,” “very Brooklyn” take on the aforementioned Sicilian: Handsome squares of artisan bread lightly adorned with aged mozzarella, potato slices and bacon or brushed with tomato sauce and sprinkled with anchovy breadcrumbs to form a classic Sfincione, the Sicilian’s direct progenitor.

Pizza Doughnais is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday to Sunday; 3541 S.E. Milwaukie Ave.; 503-232-3434; pizzadoughnais.com

Brett Kavanaugh added pizza to the Supreme Court cafeteria, but these don’t pass the bar - SF Gate

WASHINGTON - To reach the Supreme Court cafeteria, you have to pass through a metal detector, walk down a marble corridor and stroll by a portrait of the late Justice Antonin Scalia hanging right next to the lunchroom. The painting depicts Scalia, the first Italian American to sit on the high court, in a casual pose, with his black robe unzipped, revealing a girth that has known the pleasures of the table. The justice looks all but ready to dig into, say, a Hawaiian calzone with pineapple, mozzarella and ham (a featured dish this week at the cafe) before returning to oral arguments.

Were he still alive, Scalia, I suspect, would take Justice Brett Kavanaugh to task for the pizza that the court's newest member recently added to the first-floor cafeteria. I mean, if these new pies were cases before the court, the justices would rule them unconstitutional. (Well, at least eight of them would.) They'd dismiss them with extreme prejudice. They'd send them back to a lower court for further deliberation or, even better, an extreme makeover.

But hold on. I'm getting ahead of myself.

As Robert Barnes, The Washington Post's veteran Supreme Court reporter, has pointed out on numerous occasions, the court's junior member sits on the cafeteria committee until the next new justice is sworn in. The duty is something akin to frat-house hazing for folks dressed in Darth Vader robes.

A few years back, not long before Neil Gorsuch was sworn in as the newest member on the court, Justice Elena Kagan laid out the razzing that Gorsuch would soon face as the court's representative to the cafeteria committee. The insults would fly, she suggested, whenever the justices sat down over a meal in the SCOTUS cafe.

"Somebody will say, 'Who's our representative to the cafeteria committee again?' Like they don't know, right?" Kagan said, recalling her time as the junior member. "And then they'll say, 'This soup is very salty.' And I'm, like, supposed to go fix it myself?"

Yet there is a perk to the position, too: The junior justice can tinker with the menu at will. Kagan, for instance, had a frozen yogurt machine installed. Justice Stephen Breyer reportedly expanded the salad bar and encouraged the cafe to serve Starbucks coffee.

Which brings us to Kavanaugh, the justice who, during his heated confirmation hearing, testified to his affection for beer as a teenager. "I still like beer," he added. Kavanaugh also likes beer's preferred running mate, pizza. Last year, in his first speech since the rancorous hearing, Kavanaugh spoke to the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group, about securing his legacy with the high court. His tongue, perhaps covered with pizza sauce, was pressed firmly against his cheek.

"When I arrived, I noticed the cafeteria did not serve pizza. I thought, 'What an outrage,' " Kavanaugh said to the society. "My legacy is secure. It's fine by me if I'm ever known as the pizza justice."

Rest assured, no one will call Kavanaugh the pizza justice after tasting one of these pies.

There are three personal-size pizzas available: a simple cheese ($7), pepperoni ($8) and a vegetarian ($6.50). I ordered the first two and watched as an employee pulled the premade rounds from a refrigerated case and, one by one, placed them into the TurboChef Fire, a ventless countertop oven that promises "hearth-style pizza" in as little as 90 seconds.

My two pies were to wood-fired pizza what a Pinto is to a Porsche.

As I sat down in the dining room, an expanse of governmental finery borrowed from another era, I started to scan the space for its distinguishing features. I noticed the electric chandeliers overhead. The large panels on the wall, each offering a detail of the Supreme Court building, just in case its marble imperiousness didn't intimidate you enough already. I noted the wood chairs. The wood-edged tables with the inlays of . . . is that Formica? The room has the luxury-on-a-budget ambiance of an '80s-era fern bar.

Kavanaugh's pizzas fit right in. These are pies that cling to the era of American convenience, when we'd stuff any old pizza in our face as long as we could dislodge it from the freezer, remove its plastic wrapper and shove it into the oven during a commercial break for "Dallas." These are the kind of pies we endured before the Neapolitan invasion. These are the pies that fed Kavanaugh and his artisanal-starved generation.

I grew up with this style of manufactured pizza, too. My youth passed before me in a single cheese slice: the sweet pizza sauce with its snootful of dried oregano. The shredded mozzarella that melts into a jaundiced goo. The browned and slight charred edges, which you lift to reveal an undercarriage as soft as cookie dough. The pepperoni round was baked a beat or two longer than its cheesy cousin, which you could tell because the bottom looked like salmon skin, the result of the hot mesh screen on which the pie was cooked. I found some pleasure in its mild pepperoni spice, a small cry of protest in this silent hall of justice.

I left most of my pizzas untouched, and unloved, I couldn't help but wonder what Scalia would have thought of this mess. A man of particular appetites - he favored the pizza at the late A.V. Ristorante Italiano - Scalia would have, no doubt, taken a single bite, looked at Kavanaugh and said for all the cafeteria to hear, "You like pizza, Brett. But do you know anything about it?"
